Vida R. Gy., Lukács D., Végh A., Fittler A.: Inflammatory bowel diseases Part II.: Pharmaceutical care aspects

People with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases can continue the everyday life, but in case of relapse different lifestyle modifications and supplementary therapies are necessary. These approaches aim to reduce the frequency of relapses, the severity and bothersome of intestinal and extraintestinal symptoms. The pharmacist’s role in the pharmaceutical care of this patient group can be the followings: 1) help in identification of the diseases (symptoms, diarrhea excluding self-treatment) and referral when suspecting IBD, 2) diet and lifestyle counseling, OTC drug selection and 3) prescription only medication therapy management, 4) the prevention and early recognition of disease and therapeutic originated complications. As Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic and lifelong conditions the pharmacist role in the complex health care is essential in order to achieve the possible best outcome and quality of life in every individual case.

Horvat, M.: Improving the health status of the elderly using vitamins, minerals and trace elements

Similar to many other countries, Hungary is facing the immense challenges of demographic changes. The preparation of all segments of society to the emergence of this problem is paramount not only to help alleviate age-related illnesses but also to assure high levels of life quality for the elderly. This report addresses the contribution of nutrition, especially the supplementation of vitamins, minerals and trace elements, to the increase of healthy life years, the reduction and delay of age-related functional decline and disability and their roles in the treatment and prevention of aging-associated diseases.

Dános, B., László-Bencsik Á., Boldizsár I.: Trip around the Cradle of Hungarian Rambler’s Movement

Recently we invited the members of the Hungarian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences to the Dobogуkő, a well famous place in the Budapest agglomeration (ski resort with ski-lift, mountain huts, marked hiking paths and esplanades. Dobogуkő in fact a remnant of the robe of an archaic volcanic cone in the Visegrбd Mountains, therefore was built with mainly andesite rocks and pyroclasts. The top, where the first mountain hut in Hungary was created at the end of 19. century, intrinsically the upper part of this robe (699 m a. s. l.), therefore provides one of the most beautiful panoramic view to the Hungarian Danube Bend. Unsurpisingly, the Dobogуkő hut not only the old rest-house, but the craddly of Hungarian Rambler’s Movement (in these days was opened as the Hungarian Rambler Museum).

In the surrounding forests be found a sharp floristic boundary of the Pannonian Biogeographic Region, which is named as the Central Danubian Floristic Dividing Line and this line roughly coincides with the geological dividing between northern volcanic territory (Inner Carpathians) and the sedimentary rocks of the Transdanubian Mountain Range.

One of the most principal floral element is the purple hellebore (Helleborus purpurascens), which is very abundant in the Visegrбd Mts, Bцrzsцny and Bьkk Mts, in addition in Transylvania and Eastern Carpathians, as a dacic floral element – traditional herbal remedy, but presently is not used in modern phytotherapy. On the other hand, the southern mountainous area (Pilis Mts, Buda Hills) is the habitat of the transdanubian endemisms, as the dolomitic flax, the Seseli leucospermum, and sub-endemisms (Ferula sadleriana), etc.  The other plants in the Dobogуkő and Kйtbьkkfa Past territory (last is the turning point of the Budapest-Dobogуkő paved route, yet on the limestone range) are more common, but many of them have medical-pharmacological values (e.g. hawthorne, lemon balm, St. John’s wort, goldenrod, stinging nettle, willow herb, meadow saffron, deadly nightshade, monkshood) or objects of present phytochemical investigations (knapweeds, thistles).
