Rácz Á., Takács-Novák K., Tábi T., Folyovich A.: Pharmaceutical chemistry of neuroprotective, anti-demen-tia and nootropic drugs

In the countries with high level of development, life expectancy increases rapidly, and therefore increases the occurence of the long-term neurodegenerative diseases, among them the dementias. Consequently, the drugs used in the treatment of the dementias and other neurodegenerative disorders are more and more common in the pharmaceutical practice. While the antiparkinsonic agents were present in the curriculum for a long time, the Pharmaceutical Chemistry lectures about the anti-dementia and nootropic substances have been recently introduced in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Budapest. The purpose of this review is to give a summary of the pharmaceutical chemistry of these substances, discussing their supposed or proven modes of action, their structures, physico-chemical properties, and their known structure-activity relationships.

Dávid Á., Zsigmond Zs.: Validation, concepts

The FDA has published its new validation guideline in 2011, followed by the EMA guidance in 2014. The Authors have briefly introduced the history behind validation, the milestones that have led to the present regulations. The new guidance introduced some new concepts, such as the life cycle management, that has not been explicitly applied in the pharmaceutical industry. The new concept introduced by the FDA is reviewed in detail followed by a brief introduction to the European regulations, mentioning the main differences. The new guidances are reviewed in the publication.

Sunlight can cause damage to the skin. Damage includes not only a painful sunburn but also wrinkling and other changes associated with aging skin, precancerous skin growths, skin cancers, worsening of some skin diseases. Many substances, swallowed or applied to the skin, are known to cause sun-induced reactions on the skin. In phototoxicity, people have pain and develop redness, inflammation, and sometimes brown discoloration in areas of skin that have been exposed to sunlight for a brief period. In photoallergy, a late type allergic reaction causes redness, scaling, itching, and sometimes blisters. Reactions can affect areas of skin that have not been exposed to the sun. They usually develop 24 to 72 hours after sun exposure. To minimize the damaging effects of the sun, it is particularly important to avoid further sun exposure and tanning beds, wear protective clothing, and apply sunscreens. Drug users have to be informed about the potencial increased risk of drug induced light sensitivity.

Tatár Gy.: Károly Gömöry a pharmacist, a lover of arts and his new pharmacy „The Holy Spirit”

The third pharmacy of the town Pest was established in 1786. Károly Gömöry (1779-1845) pharmacist bought the pharmacy in 1803. The pharmacy named after the Holy Spirit in Király street was located in one of the most rapidly developing districts of Pest. The trade of the pharmacy was constantly increasing, therefore Gömöry planned to have a new pharmacy built in 1812, which was ready by 1813. Since Gömöry was fond of arts he entrusted Mihály Pollack (1773-1855) one of the most well-known Hungarian architects of his time to plan the building of the new pharmacy. Mihály Pollack was an internationally recognised master of classicistic architecture, his most significant work was the planning of the building of The National Museum of Hungary. The interior decoration as well as the pieces of furniture in the pharmacy were prepared by Márton Rosznagel (1773-1855) who created a so called „empire style” interior. The decoration of the officina (the sales room of the pharmacy) was prepared by Lőrinc Dunajszky (1784-1833) sculptor. Dunajszky prepared six gilt panel pictures with the following topics: Asclepius, Hygieia, Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Healing and Medicine. In the pictures there are mythological figures and puttos (the typical figures of baroque art) who substitute pharmacists and prepare medicine instead of them. The aforementioned three artists played a crucial role in the creation of a number of well-known buildings in Budapest. The above pharmacy is on display at the Semmelweis Medical History Museum in Apród street (Budapest).
