The treatment of several central nervous system diseases is impeded due to the unique structure of the brain and the protecting function of the blood-brain barrier. On the other hand, the rapid elimination of drug particles and the consequent low therapeutic response also poses challenges for the pharmaceuticals. Nowadays, the more detailed understanding of the structure and pathophysiology of the blood-brain barrier and the development of pharmaceutical sciences enable the creation of drug delivery systems offering targeted brain delivery. The potential utilization of different types of nanoparticles for targeted delivery purposes, such as liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles and solid lipid nanocarriers have been proven by numerous research papers. Furthermore, the exploitation of physiological pathways in drug delivery, such as adsorption or cell mediated transcytosis has been gaining an increasing interest, due to their better selectivity. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review on the modern approaches for targeted brain drug delivery.

Árok R.: Stability of Vitamin C in different solutions for parenteral use in oncology
Intravenous vitamin C (IVC) is a popular alternative and complementary therapy in cancer treatment although its effectiveness seems to be controversial. In Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Hospital and Clinic one of our patients who refused further chemotherapy required and was given intravenous ascorbic acid treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the clinical pharmacist in the preparation of high dose vitamin C infusion. There are two methods to prepare the infusion: diluting from a registered intravenous (iv.) product or preparing parenteral medication from the active ingredient. We used the first method to fulfill the required treatment but because of financial consideration we decided to investigate the second method as an alternative for future patients. We examined the technology of the preparation, the quality control and the storage of the infusion. According to the ResAP(2011)1 of the Council of Europe the preparation of the infusion of vitamin C has high risk, because of the parenteral use and the aseptic method of preparation. Our data can offer a recommendation for an appropriate preparation.

Hawthorn has been used in the folk medicine for centuries, however its application with its present indication dates back only to the 18-19th century. Several Crataegus species are applied in the treatment in cardiovascular diseases and some of these are included in the European Pharmacopoeia. The efficacy in the treatment of cardiac insufficiency has been studied in clinical trials and the complex mode of action has also been analyzed in detail. This article reviews the phytochemistry and pharmacology of hawthorn and clinical trials carried out with this plant, the Medicinal Plant of the Year 2015 in Hungary.
